Lamp Works, Birmingham

Ellen secured consent for substantial demolition, refurbishment and extensive new build on a prominent gateway site in the historic Jewellery Quarter Conservation Area in Birmingham City Centre. The scheme will provide 129 built-to-Rent residential units, courtyards and public amenity space, alongside active ground floor commercial space. The amount of demolition required, and the (part) five storey heights required to ensure the scheme was viable were a significant challenge to overcome in the Conservation Area where policy dictates four storey maximum. Exceptional design quality and close, collaborative working with the Local planning Authority and other stakeholders was required to successfully secure planning permission, successfully arguing design quality and viability to tip the planning balance.
